Kolkata: ISF‘s Bhangar MLA Nawsad Siddique on Sunday said that he was ready to contest from Diamond Harbour in the Lok Sabha polls. “I am ready to contest from Diamond Harbor constituency and have expressed that before the state committee. No final decision has been taken on that. We expect to finalize the candidates by Monday,” Siddique said.
CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty on Sunday said the party would not oppose Siddique’s proposal for contesting from Diamond Harbour. “We have told other Left parties that we will not come in the way of Siddique. If he wants to fight from Diamond Harbor, we will support him,” Chakraborty said.
Meanwhile, looking to field candidates from at least 10 seats from Bengal, Congress is likely to announce its list of candidates on Monday. Congress sources on Sunday indicated that names of candidates for 12 seats had been sent to the party’s high command and seat-sharing talks with the Left were underway.
Sources said state Congress leaders had sent proposals for constituencies like Darjeeling, Raiganj, Behrampore, Jangipur, Malda North, Malda South, Purulia, Birbhum, Kolkata North, Uluberia, Barrackpore and Basirhat. Names of leaders like Binay Tamang, Sankar Malakar, Isha Khan Choudhury and Pradip Bhattacharya were being considered by the high command.
The Left Front, which announced 16 candidates on Friday, had mentioned that it was open to discussions with Congress leaders. State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury had also said that the party was having discussions with the Left and was ready to continue seat-sharing talks. ISF has said it would field a candidate against CPM’s Srijan Bhattacharya in Jadavpur. “We have never said that we will not contest CPM or Congress candidates. We don’t have to depend on LF or Congress,” Siddique said.
