In 1610, Galileo Galilei, the renowned Italian astronomer, became the first person to observe Saturn through a telescope, although a very rudimentary one. However, due to the limited resolution of his telescope, he couldn’t clearly resolve the rings of Saturn, which are now known as one of its most distinct features.
Galileo initially thought that Saturn had two large moons on either side, describing it as a planet with “ears.” This misconception stems from the appearance of the rings, which look like extensions or appendages to him.
